How to preload GTA 6

GTA VI pre-load begins at local midnight on November 12, 2026. Before then: own the game on the account that will play, keep the console connected during rest or sleep, turn on auto-download, and clear storage. Pre-load is not early access. It stores game data on the console; play still waits for release day.

Console setup steps for pre-load, taken from PlayStation and Xbox support pages, plus what is not announced.

Source boundary: Rockstar facts are marked official; store listings and third-party reports are labeled as such and are not Rockstar announcements. Not a mission walkthrough.

Confirmed now

  • Rockstar Store: pre-load begins November 12, 2026.
  • Rockstar Support: pre-load begins at local midnight on November 12, 2026.
  • Rockstar Store: boxed versions contain only a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12.
  • PlayStation Support: pre-order content downloads automatically when auto-download is enabled for the pre-order in the Game Library.

Still unknown

  • The download size. Neither Rockstar nor PlayStation lists one.
  • Any day-one patch size or timing.
  • Xbox-specific pre-install wording for GTA VI beyond the Xbox store listing.

PS5: set up pre-load

  • Buy or redeem GTA VI on the account that will play. PlayStation Support: a pre-order shows in the Game Library with a countdown to release.
  • Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode: turn on Stay Connected to the Internet (PlayStation Support).
  • Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates: turn on Auto-Download (PlayStation Support).
  • Game Library > select GTA VI > select the release timer. A selected checkbox next to the content means auto-download is on; clear a box to stop an item downloading.
  • Put the console in rest mode instead of shutting it down before November 12 so it can download unattended.

Xbox Series X|S: set up pre-install

  • Buy or redeem GTA VI on the Microsoft account that will play. The Xbox store lists a November 19, 2026 release on Series X|S.
  • Profile & system > Settings > General > Power options: choose Sleep as the power mode (Xbox Support).
  • Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates: turn on Keep my games & apps up to date (Xbox Support).
  • Xbox Support describes games and add-ons installing automatically when those two settings are on.
  • Check My games & apps on November 12 to see whether the pre-install has started.

Storage and network, before November 12

  • Delete or archive games you do not plan to play. Rockstar has not announced an install size, so free more space than you think you need.
  • Update the console system software.
  • Use a wired or stable connection and avoid networks that block large downloads.
  • Do not start other large downloads at midnight on November 12.
  • GTA 6 file size: No official size yet; a third-party report says about 210GB (unconfirmed). Console space comparison and expansion options.
  • GTA 6 preload date: Pre-load time in each time zone.

Boxed copy: redeem the code first

Rockstar Store: a physical version contains only a download code, with no disc, so that you can pre-load on November 12. Redeem the code on your console account before pre-load opens; then follow the steps above.

PlayStation download codes are region-tied to the platform account country group. Xbox codes are not region-locked.

What pre-load does not do

Pre-load is not early access. It stores game data on the console; play still waits for release day. No official source we checked has announced early access; see the early-access page.

Some game features may need an internet connection (Rockstar Store legal notice). Rockstar has not said whether a day-one patch will be needed.
